In this video Weedie demonstrates the slap note on djembe. It is played edge of the drum head, with the thumb lightly held away from the fingers. Use a relaxed wrist, and very light contact.

Although the slap note is a sharper sound, it is important NOT to hit harder. The best sound is achieved through a light and relaxed motion.
